“黑马”这个短语是一个习惯表达，指的是通常不为人知的人意外地获胜或成功，尤其是在某种竞争中。

这个短语最早出现在本杰明·迪斯雷利的小说《年轻的公爵》(1831年)中。迪斯雷利笔下的主人公圣詹姆斯公爵(Duke of St. James)参加了一场赛马，结果出人意料:“一匹从未被人想到过的黑马，粗心的圣詹姆斯(Duke of St. James)甚至在名单中也没有看到它，它以压倒性的胜利冲过了看台。”
